Unzipping the duffle bag released an odor of a dozen years – the odor of a dozen sweaty boys who had all worn the oversized and unwashed baseball catcher’s gear. The new catcher strapped on the shin-guards; they came half way up his thighs. The chest protector sagged below his knees. The face guard was larger than his head. At least his glove fit. He could catch, throw and hit, but behind home plate, his gear made playing troublesome. When it was his turn at bat, a wild pitch veered behind him. He moved and turned his head. His oversized batting helmet remained in position, facing first base, while he peered one-eyed toward third base through the helmet’s ear hole. This scene of poorly fitting baseball gear is similar to what the boy David, destined to be king of Israel, experienced when he entered King Saul’s tent to put on Saul’s armor to prepare to fight Goliath. Little David had volunteered to fight the giant Goliath. The bronze helmet was too big. The coat of mail weighed more than the boy. The sword was too heavy. David took a step and thought that the oversized armor would get him killed. He took it all off. David chose to rely on his faith and his slingshot. Faith fit him. Let’s Pray: Dear God, some of the things that come along with religion do not fit us so well, so we tend to chuck everything aside, including You — sorry about that. We do not need the costume of religion anyway. We need faith in You. Amen. Here’s a Thought: Faith fits. Try it on. Sources: Rev. Charles Carrick, teacher, coach and chaplain at Wyoming Seminary Prep School, while preaching in Wilson Chapel on Ocean Point, Maine, told a similar story in his sermon. wyomingseminary.org 1 Samuel 17 Visit: dailydevotions.org
