Up! Good Christen Folk and Listen was first published in the Cowley Carol Book, which was edited by the Rev. George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934). Woodward was an Anglican priest and poet who mostly wrote original religious poems in English or from translations of ancient authors. In 1893, Woodward published “Carols for Christmas-Tide, Series II”. The following year he published Carols for Easter and Ascension-tide, which included an original composition by himself: This joyful Eastertide. Woodward wrote the text of Up! Good Christen Folk and Listen and also harmonized a melody from Piae Cantiones (1582) for O quam mundum, quam jocundum, but more often left that task to his collaborator, Charles Wood. He would later compile a 1910 edition of Piae Cantiones for the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society. A number of his hymns and carols are often heard, including This joyful Eastertide, Ding Dong Merrily on High and Past Three OClock. In 1924, he and Wood published A Cambridge Carol Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter and Other Seasons in 1924.
