“Up On Cripple Creek,” The Band, 1976 from The Last Waltz. Robbie Robertson, the group’s lead guitarist and main writer of the ballad, always considered Up on Cripple Creek to be a simple, unpretentious bluegrass standard whose lyrics refer to being a child, playing in mud, climbing trees and being free. Thats where Bessie takes the narrator: back to his childhood. As someone who was lucky to see The Band play live with and without Bob Dylan, I can clearly say that this is one group that always was better live than in the studio. They literally fed off of their audience as the late Levon Helm, the drummer and lead singer of “Cripple Creek,” does so brilliantly here, with Robbie Robertson and the late Rick Danko adding luster as well. There was no hipper band in rock ‘n roll from 1968-76 than The Band.
