The Grapevine is the stretch of I-5 that crosses over Tejon Pass from the LA basin to Californias central valley. When going north, there are only three routes out of town, I-5, I-15 or US 101. I-5 is the most direct route to Bakersfield and north but it is a hard pull up to the top then a long downgrade as it drops you into the salad bowl of California. This stretch includes two escape ramps for trucks that overheat the brakes on the downside.
