Up for a challenge? The UK has just joined in the fray, spearheaded by none other than Zhivko Stoyanov, who is coming to realise that it is not the sky that has limits for him, but his belief in himself!:-) Zhivko, your courage and determination to continue against all odds is in-deed inspirational! Fighting back from the hugely chronic illness you had, leaves ME with no doubt that.... I AM SPECIAL BECAUSE I HAVE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD Right now, if you ask me what I am really good at, I will struggle to point out something. May be because I am too much of a perfectionist?! There are many things that I can become really good at, if I put all my efforts and focus in them, but at the moment I don’t feel drawn to any of them specifically. Looking back, I can see that I thoroughly enjoy teaching something that I understand (for example mathematics) and creating a good and fascinating story around it. But it is not the subject that I like in the teaching, although I do like mathematics. It is the interaction with the person that I find most enjoying, especially if the person comes to me because he/she really needs to. In these interactions I find that I can usually sense what the student’s frame of reference is (what they know and what they would struggle with), so I can taylor my explanations/voice/speed accordingly. It gives me a lot of pleasure when I can see the lights coming on. It is amazing, and uplifting! And it is a great honour and privilege! I had one student who I resisted teaching, because of his very insisting parents. :-) He was really struggling with mathematics, although to his parents he was amongst the best… One day, after he finished school, he phoned me to tell me he is now using mathematics in his work. :-) This is, for the moment, “the thing” that has made my heart sing. Also, I find that people that know me for longer tend to trust me and, in the past, would often share with me what is going on in their lives. Sometimes, in such interactions I would feel used, and at other times people will just release the pressure; sometimes they want my honest feedback, or … just a friend. So I feel I have something special that draws people to me, either so that I can teach them mathematics, or simply because they feel safe to share. And I have already made a difference in someone’s life. It is just that for some time now I have deliberately made myself unavailable for such interactions with people, because I could not see what is in it for me (also in practical terms). May be it is time for a change. youtube/watch?v=-Mfd4E7kpvc
