Up next for the Hawks (both boys and girls) is the SJ Shootout - TopicsExpress

Up next for the Hawks (both boys and girls) is the SJ Shootout this Saturday (9/20) at Rowan College at Gloucester County (AKA Gloucester County College) in Sewell. Middle School races stat at 8:30 am with the freshman races starting at 9 am. Unlike the Cherokee Challenge, there is plenty of parking at Sewell. The Shootout is a relatively new meet having first been run in 2004. All of the meets have been held at Gloucester County College. The format of the meet is different. In addition to freshman (2.39 miles) and JV races (3.1 miles), there are 3 varsity races (all 3.1 miles). One race is comprised of a team’s 5, 6 and 7 runners. There is a second race comprised of a team’s 3 and 4 runners and a third race comprised of a team’s 1 and 2 runners (the stud race). Team scoring is also different. The place finish of a team’s 1, 2,3, and 4 runners are totaled along with the place finish of the team’s first runner in the 5,6,7 race. The team with the lowest score wins. The course is one of the more challenging courses in South Jersey. I think it is a slower course than either the Pennypacker or West Deptford courses. The course is run on grass and dirt paths. The first mile and one half is flat. At about the mile and one half, the course enters a hilly wooded area for about three quarters of a mile. After coming out of the woods, the remainder of the course primarily flat. From a spectator perspective, you can easily view the first mile and one quarter of the race and the last quarter mile. Viewing the middle of the race is spotty at best. It would be great to have a large turnout to cheer on the runners. Hope to see you there. Go Hawks!
