Up next in for the featured movie tunes is the song “Fame”, which if you remember was theme song for the movie with the same name. The song was sung by Irene Cara who played the role of Coco Hernandez in the original version of the movie. The song won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original song in 1980. It also placed at #51 on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. “Fame” reached #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, #1 on the US Billboard Dance chart, and became an international hit reaching #1 in five other countries. The 1980 hit movie, Fame, catapulted Irene Cara to stardom. She was originally cast as a dancer but, when producers heard her voice they re-wrote the role of Coco for her. Cara sang both the title song “Fame” and the film’s other single “Out Here On My Own” on the film’s multi-platinum soundtrack. During the Academy Awards that year, history was made when for the first time, two songs from the same film were nominated in the same category and sung by the same artist. Cara had the opportunity to be one of the few singers to perform more than one song at the Oscar ceremony. Of the two songs, “Fame” took home the award. Have a great day!
