Up until recently historians have typically focused on the big events of wars and such as seen by the winners rulers and elites who typically run things. Howard Zinns GREAT book Peoples History of the United States changes course on that trend to present our history from the perspective of regular people on the ground, (ref. historyisaweapon/zinnapeopleshistory.html ). The inherent perspective and ideology of the historian always filters the full history in ways that often the reader does not think much about. Heres a 4 minute video clip of scenes of the worlds history in the modern era as part of a music video for the song Its a Beautiful Day. Whoever put it together seems to have a sense of humor and curiosity about the big events that reminds me of my sense that we ought to devote more time analyzing and remembering the leadership mistakes that led up to the need or the decision for all our past wars. We ought to do that analysis during the year and on Memorial Day each year, at least half of the time spent on ceremonies should be spent remembering the steps that led the world into such difficult wars. If there were big near catastrophe events like the Cuban Missile Crises, we should spend some time remembering and highlighting how those leaders avoided going to war too. youtube/watch?v=96fXV8Z95Go
