In collaboration with the films Director and the Director of photography (DOP) they provide the aesthetic sensibilities and specific physical requirements to support and visually realize the script. Production Designers and Art Directors must have: - Boundless imagination, creativity, and an astute visual awareness as well as drawing and design skills - Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey their ideas and vision to others - A keen interest in various cultures & lifestyles; art & architecture and good historical knowledge. - A working sense of camera and lighting theory - An understanding of all technical and practical aspects of the film and video production process The instructor will provide a general overview regarding Production Design and Art Direction but more specifically; give insight into the Production Designers role on smaller independent films where resourcefulness and fiscal restraint are integral tools to the successful “Indie”. INSTRUCTOR’S BIOGRAPHY Chris O’Neil has enjoyed a 30 year career as a successful Costume Designer/Production Designer in film & television. Leaving his hometown of Moncton N.B. in 1978 he got his start while waiting tables at “Second City”; Toronto’s historic Old Fire hall theatre when he was asked by the stage manager to assist with props and costumes. From his early work on “Night Heat”; the first Canadian TV series to air in prime time south of the border to his recent efforts on the Emmy award winning “The Phantoms” he has designed, dressed and nurtured acting greats such as Christopher Plummer, Keanu Reeves, Debbie Reynolds and Charlton Heston.
