Upcoming symposium in NUI Galway to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the naming of neanderthals as a distinct human species by William King, then a Galway based professor of geology (Supported by the IRC under the New Foundations programme) To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the naming of Homo neanderthalensis, NUIG will gather some of the most important figures in neanderthal research for an interdisciplinary symposium from 23-25 May. The symposium will include keynote addresses from several of the major figures in the field (e.g. Svante Paabo, whose team sequenced the neanderthal genome; Josh Akey, who outlined the contribution of neanderthals to the modern human genome; Katerina Harvati-Papatheodorou, a poleoanthropologist who demonstrated the shared African origin of modern humans).
