Update 7/21/14 2:00 pm There has been a new development...doctors believe she could possibly be showing signs of NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis). m.kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/nec.html Its most commonly found in premies, but with Savannah, could possibly be from not getting enough oxygen to her gut on ECMO. She was tolerating feeds well, but had several alarming bloody stools. NEC can happen quickly and can be aggressive, so they are pretreating it with an antibiotic. Because she has little reserve and NEC can be aggressive, they are taking all necessary precaution to prevent a major bowel infection. All feeds have stopped and thankfully, other more common signs of NEC are not present. This may be the infection that started her respiratory descent. They see no tears or gases in her bowls at this time. Good news, her bowels are responding to rest. Once doctors feel her bowel irritation is gone, probably a week, theyll start feeding slowly. Shes down on her oxygen and theyll begin discussing extubation in the coming days. Our little warrior is keeping us all on our toes. Im constantly in awe of her strength. Feeling so blessed to be able to be here at UCSF with such incredible nurses and doctors. Thank you for your continued prayers and loving thoughts everyone. 🙏
