Update: “Energy” Drink Madness continues unabated Congress is investigating the use of caffeine energy drinks in grade schools, as the number of deaths associated with these products continues to rise. dallasnews/lifestyles/health-and-fitness/health/20130902-medical-experts-demand-energy-drink-makers-stop-marketing-to-kids.ece But everything is looking rosy for the purveyors of these useless and dangerous products. Why? Because Americans are desperate for energy, and it is not illegal to put the word “energy” on your product as long as it contains caffeine. As I’ve explained before, caffeine does produce a transient increase in mental alertness. Heck, I have a cup of coffee most mornings. But I don’t have 15, nor do I believe that caffeine gives me energy. Caffeine is a chemical stimulant, much like a slap in the face. Both trigger a stress response that increases alertness, but stress does not equal energy. Real energy is made in the cells of your body. How do I know caffeine does not provide real energy? Simple. I just ask users how they feel when they wake up in the morning. Usually, the answer is “exhausted.” If your product is giving you energy, you should feel great in the morning; invigorated by a restorative night’s sleep. But if your product is caffeine, it’s actually robbing you of precious energy. Here’s a useful analogy, because money is a form of energy. Let’s say, it’s the end of the month and your friends are all going to a concert. The tickets are $120, which you don’t have. So you go to one of those quick cash companies to get a loan against your next paycheck. When they hand you the loan agreement, you are shocked at the APR. It is not unusual for these companies to charge 400% to 850%, with steep fees if your payment is late. That’s the situation with Energy Drinks. You’re having a hard time getting through the day, and everywhere you look, there’s Red Bull, Monster, Rock Star and a hundred other companies offering you a quick loan. But the interest will kill you. Tune in tomorrow for the latest energy scam. Because one of the slap to your face companies was just bought by Amway. You’re going to love their response to the FAQ: Why do you put caffeine in your product?
