Update: Matthew has been doing GREAT!! Platelets are low but not dangerously low. He is so happy to be home. Our only little hiccup was Saturday night when he had pain as I flushed his port. Called the Onc who said to de-access him and bring him in to CHOC to be reaccessed. When I de-accessed him I noticed that his bottom port (that wasnt accessed) was black, raised and looked disturbing so I put a gauze over it and Sunday morning we went to CHOC to have him re-accessed and the bottom port looked at. The nurse asked if I had put cream on and I said no but you will see why, and I wanted it looked at before hand too. The nurse looked and was too concerned and had the fellow look at it, who then had the attending look. Not exactly sure what it was but feel that it was external and not internal was a good thing. Ordered a chest x-ray to make sure port was still in place, and cultures of upper port after the ID doctor evaluated it. Nervous that our stay home will be cut short as they talked about possibly keeping him. ID doctor came and determined it was an under skin scab ...... a blood blister if you will. Not infected as yet but to not access it, culture it or do anything with it. Just let it be and heal on its own. With this, we got the okay to go home after the upper port was in and cultures were gotten. They also drew a CBC and Panel so that we didnt have to come back on Monday. Close call but HAPPY. Matthew has not complained of any port pain since he was re-accessed and will enjoy the rest of the week home. Thursday we have Onc appt with labs before our Monday 11/24 long admissions. Thank you everyone! We are feeling the love which is getting me into the great spirit of the season of love, thankfulness and giving.
