Update after Vet Visit. Lacy was seen today by the vet. After two hours of xrays, ultrasounds, and lots of test, we have a clear overview of what is going on with her and what the goals, plus hurdles are going to be. Lacy likes the camera -- typical Scottie -- LOL. Included some pictures of her at the vets office today.... Love this girl! She has officially been handed off to Scottish Terrier Rescue of the Southeast. She arrived at the vet with a low grade fever (103.4). The vet determined that she had just finished a heat cycle, so there was an initiaal concern of Pyometra. So,Dr. Mary did an ultrasound, which appeared normal (with some appearances of possible stones noted). The tumor issues were discussed. It is cancer, but the question is if it is benign. The recommendation is to remove the tumor completely, as well as spay at the same time. The concern is the present high level of anemia that Lacy is experiencing, as the tumor removals incur a high volume of blood lose, which could kill Lacy at this point if surgery is preformed to soon. The shelter had prescribed Petinic (8 ml) for 14 days. Dr. Mary concurred with this approach, and would like to do another blood panel at the end of the 14 days to better come up with a surgery plan for the tumor removal. We then moved to the ears. Lacy presently has a dual ear infection. A culture was taken, and the ears were flushed. Mometamax, which is an antibiotic drop, was prescribed, as well as medicated ear solution. Instructions are flush both ears every other day and apply 8 drops of medication per ear, daily. Next were the eyes. We stained with no ulcers noted. She has dual eye infections, with secondary dry eye. The shelter had prescribed Genteal (which is a lubricant) and Optimmune for dry eye. Dr. Mary agreed with this, but also added an antibiotic called Neo Poly Bac Opthalmic Ointment. All three are to be given twice a day, with at least 5 minutes apart. She advised to use the Genteal as often as possible throughout the day. The shelter had also prescribed Baytril for the skin infection, which Dr. Mary said to continue to give. Xrays were preformed to look at the heart and liver. She has a strong, healthy heart and no abnormalities in the liver. She does have arthritis, but does not seem to cause her discomfort. No medications prescribed for the arthritis. It was viewed as normal aging process. Cytology was done, with the urine being sent for a Bladder Tumor Antigen Test. This was done at the request of the rescue as a means of reassurance as this is a common aliment to the breed. She does need a dental, but the thought process was to wait for at least 6 to 9 months after the tumor removal before addressing the dental issues. She is a big girl -- weighing 30 lbs. She is a big built dog, but is a little overweight. According to the shelter reports, she is Heartworm Negative. She was negative for parasites, and does not have Giardia. CBC panel was run in house, as the shelter reports did not give the actual anemia readings to build upon for seeing if Lacy is improving in this regard. She is scheduled for a repeat visit on Friday, October 24th. So, all in all, the news is good. In fact, the eye issues might be reversable to a degree, which was exciting news. The biggest two obstacles right now is the anemia, and the tumor. Once the tumor is removed, and pending the results of the lab reports regarding it, I think I will then breathe a huge sigh of relief. She was delivered to her foster mom tonight, where she proceeded to relax and was falling to sleep. I will provide updates when I am given them. Her rescue is going to continue to be costly; so, please continue to share her fundraiser. youcaring/nonprofits/lacy-has-survived-the-horrors-and-needs-our-help-to-heal-/245569 Tags: Scottish Terrier Rescue of the Southeast
