Update from Lori (9:00 p.m., January 26)- Today was another relatively slow day for Dad due to it being a Sunday. This morning we attended a wellness class for the stroke patients and family members. It was a mandatory class and packed full of good information of preventative measures that can/should be used going forward. The class began with the very sobering statistic that weve heard frequently, but still try not to fear, that once youve had a stroke, you are ten times more likely to have a second one. The first three--six months are a critical time. It gets very easy to see his progress and where were at now and forget the dangers that still exist. We are a family of faith though and that is what we must lean on, because none of us know what tomorrow may hold. None of us were promised an easy road. We just pray for strength for whatever comes and look forward with optimism. We have seen so many miracles already. His (and our) favorite physical therapist, Wendy, came in today just to work with him! He did ten minutes on the special exercise bike that he pedals with both his arms and legs! She used the sticky paper again for his left hand to grip the arm pedal and he is holding on so much better than even a few days ago! Then we spent about 45 minutes on something that was also sobering at first, but then extremely educational and reassuring--what Dad can do--and we can do in the event that Dad falls once at home. Obviously any injury during a fall would require a 911 call, but these lessons were to help him know what to do to move himself to a safe position, if he fell and wasnt injured, but was on the floor. Dad did really well in learning and it was very hard. Wendy had me get in the same positions to mimic how it would feel to Dad and to show us how to walk him through it. She also taught us stretches that we can help him do at home to work with the tightness he has in his limbs. They were not easy and she again had me do the same as Dad. He was very sore tonight but we will continue to work on it. Tomorrow is family training day in preparation of his discharge to outpatient rehab on Thursday. These videos tonight are from his physical therapy session. Thank you all for your continued love, prayers, nightly messages and posts--we are so blessed by each of you!
