Update from Mrs. Brant on the 5th Ave. Awards..... The Z Center Stage Theater Company had a fruitful first year of participation in the 5th Avenue Theater High School Musical Theater Awards program this year. At the beginning of the year, schools have the option of applying to be a part of the program, and have adjudicators come from the theater to watch their musicals throughout the year. This year over 80 schools did so, including Zillah for the first time. Our first weekend of Seussical fell on the very last weekend of the judging, and they attended both opening night and the first Saturday. Then, we waited. On May 21, we watched the nominations list get published with great excitement. We were nominated in five Outstanding categories, and considering there were over 80 schools entered and a lot of them got one or less nominations, we felt great about that. Add on three honorable mentions and that was even better for our little school. On June 11, we attended the Awards Show at the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle. It was a room full of over 2000 very excited drama groups and their directors. Zane Gust and Alice Hiemstra performed in the opening number, and announced our show and Zillah High School at the end of that number. Not too long later, we found out we had won the trophy for Best Costumes (thanks Debra Geffe) and Outstanding Ensemble Cast (that is an award for our entire group in Seussical) and it is AWESOME! Realizing that only 2 schools got more than 3 awards and only handful got two, we were really blessed our first time out! The east side of the mountains was very well represented as well! Way to go Seussical Cast and Crew, and directors Lynn Brant, Jason Schoonover, Abbie Bounds, Brittany Andrews, Bree Bower, Annalee Davis (all alumni!) (and Aaron Nix!), and all the parents (including Larry Hiemtra for set construction) that help make us what we are at Z Center Stage! Like the MC said when it started, "This is your state tournament", and it was! GO ZILLAH!!!!!!!
