Update from my brother.... Just back from surgical consult in Boston. First let me say the chief surgeon has lots of experience and confidence in what she does, as well as a wonderful personality and bedside manner. According to her, Dads cancer does not seem to be originating from the pancreas, rather the common bile duct (cholangiocarcinoma), based on all the testing we have done thus far. Again, conflicting info during the consult, from what we have been told more recently by the gastro doc, but we are going with what this surgical oncologist believes is the case. She has a lot of experience in this field. The surgeons plan is to start minimally, taking out gallbladder, resection/reconstruction of the common bile duct, and removal of relevant lymph nodes. She hopes this is where the surgery will end, but she made us aware that if she notices other organ involvement during the surgery, she will continue and get into an even more complicated procedure called a whipple procedure. She has booked her whole day for Dads surgery alone, and as she said, if she can stop at the first part, great, but if she needs to continue, she will have the time to do it due to booking her schedule accordingly. After surgery, there will be talks of possible chemo, and radiation. Surgery is tentatively planned for Wednesday, August 21.
