Update on Alien: We posted on Wednesday that he had blood in his urine and took him to our vet where he was given antibiotics and diagnosed with an UTI. Thursday night/Friday morning he still had blood tinged urine but his vet told us that this would continue and he would start to feel better by the weekend. Yesterday afternoon it was getting harder for him to go to the bathroom and by six he was meowing and hissing because he couldnt go at all. We found a 24 hour emergency animal clinic that just recently opened up twenty minutes away from home and wound up rushing him there. They immediately took him in the back to do an ultrasound and discovered that he was not blocked, so they began a grueling six hours of tests and blood work and x rays to pinpoint the problem and finally they discovered the lining of his bladder was inflamed and swollen. The doctor asked us if there were any changes in our household in the past couple months, such as diet and cat litter and new additions to the house and we told them that my son is home from college for the summer, new furbaby came with him, we had our bathroom recently remodeled so we have had workers coming and going from the house, and I did change cat litter recently only because the past few times Wal-Mart has been out of stock of what we usually buy and this was a cheaper brand. The doctor said that was most likely the culprit because his bladder showed signs of stress which meant he was holding it for too long and wasnt using the litter box as much. I was horrified! I never knew that something simple as change in routine could trigger something so catastrophic. They sent us home with medication, one is a capsule which will relax his bladder and urethra opening and a painkiller for the discomfort. Already this morning there has been remarkable improvement, I watched him use his litter box and it took a couple minutes but he peed! No howling or hissing in pain, I was so happy! This has definitely been a life lesson, a change in routine for a cat is detrimental. I am just relieved that my little man is on the mend.
