Update on BILL 113.. Aloha e kakou, The recessed hearing for Bill 113 is reconvening on November 19, at 9 a.m. in Kona, and can be viewed at all council satellite offices. This could be an historic day, but a lot of work is still needed to make it so. Hawaii Tribune Herald and West Hawaii Today reported on Nov. 13: “Yoshimoto and Wille both said they expect a vote to be reached at the Tuesday meeting, after testimony concludes.” Council Chairman Yoshimoto is dropping his proposed amendments in Comm. 393.166. westhawaiitoday/sections/news/local-news/councilman-drops-changes-gmo-bill.html If you signed up on Nov 5 to testify, but have not yet done so, you may be required to re-sign up for testimony when you arrive at the Council room on Nov. 19. If you have already testified, you won’t be able to do so again, however, you can submit more written testimony. There were sixty people still waiting to testify in Hilo at the end of the last session, and with new testifiers added to that number, it could take considerable time to get through the testimony. There is an urgency to wrap up testimony so that the council can vote, and so we are recommending that testimony be kept short, under one minute, to “call for the vote.” The longer we allow this process to go on, the more damaging amendments can be introduced, and we could be left standing with a bill that has gone far astray from the intent of prohibiting GMOs. Councilmember Wille is planning to have all testimony printed out to exhibit at the hearing. If you have already testified, please take the time to send written testimony again before noon on Nov. 18. Include in the subject line “Support Bill 113” so that it can be quickly identified. If you have not yet testified and plan to do so, please send in written testimony in addition to your spoken testimony. If you prefer not to email written testimony, take 14 copies of your testimony and give it to the clerk at the time you testify. Submit written testimony to: [email protected] In addition to submitting your written testimony, please email your testimony to councilmembers you feel need to hear from you. They are probably not reading the on-line written testimony and would need a message sent directly to them. Your subject line should read: “Support Bill 113.” Attached is a council contact list for this purpose. Other Actions Needed: Letters to the Editor Detailed testimony can be used as a letter to the editor and submitted to all local newspapers. Check their websites for length limitations and other requirements. Hawaii Tribune Herald P. O. Honorable William P. Kenoi Mayor, County of Hawaii 25 Aupuni Street, Hilo, HI 96720 (808) 961-8211 | Fax The mayor does consider public opinion as he looks toward his reelection. Ask organizations, civic groups, church groups, growers, beekeepers, business owners, individuals, etc., to mail hard copy letters to the mayor by Nov. 19, (as the opposition is doing) expressing support for Bill 113 and asking him to sign the bill. Suggested letter points: we are mothers, fathers, kupuna, students, working families who contribute to the economy and support Bill 113; the Bill 113 is fair and a good compromise because it contains specific exemptions and an emergency exemption; GMOs would hurt HI export crops as it has papaya; all farmers should be able to grow without threat of contamination, The County needs laws where the Federal and State governments fail to regulate GMOs; health and safety research has substantiated harm to people and animals eating GMOs, etc. Sign the Petition: Ban GMO Crops on Hawaii Island By Passing and Signing Bill 113. By signing the petition, you can help build the pressure on Mayor Billy Kenoi and the Hawaii County Council to pass this critical bill. credomobilize/petitions/ban-gmo-crops-on-hawai-i-island-by-passing-and-signing-bill-113 Mahalo for your support!
