Update on Derek....Well he did manage to go all night without pulling his ng tube out...it had begun to be a habit...He had a hydrascan this morning around 7 a.m. in preparation of the procedure scheduled for later on in the day. Around noon they took him for a type of endoscopic procedure in which they placed a stent in his biliary tract because it was leaking. Scans had been showing fluid in his abdomen with the possibility of fluid being blood. After that procedure they took him to CT where they did a CT directed needle aspiration of the fluid. There was a lot of fluid and they had to place a small draining tube. They had placed him back on vent for the two procedure and when they were waking him up from procedure, he was not a happy camper. About 30 minutes after they got him back to his room, they removed it. They also pulled his ng tube out during one of the procedures and for now it will stay out. Just a few minutes ago, the nurse fed him some ice chips which he had to chew up and swallow, then she spoon fed him some water and when it looked like he could actually swallow this, she handed him a cup with a small amount of water and let him drink that. All during the ice and water, he kept saying this is so good, this is so good. Up until today he had been limited to swabs dipped in water so Im sure it tasted like pure heaven to actually be able to drink. Hopefully tomorrow if he continues to swallow well, they will let him have some Gatorade!!!! Since coming back to his room he has drifted in and out as some of the anesthesia is still with him. Each day continues to bring some type of improvement and am hopeful that within next few days he will be on soft diet and maybe moved to a step down unit. He has gotten better about coughing as I have told him over and over that he has to cough as much as possible in order to be able to breathe better. His chest x-rays which are taken daily have begun to show improvement every day which is great.
