Update on Howard: The surgeon (Dr. Feher) came in and looked and the incision while Ivy was changing the wound vac, he said he will re-check the area on Wednesday. They change out the gray sponge type covering that covers the large incision in his abdomen every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. He is given morphine before they change this site out, as it is painful. It looks like Howard is going to need a skin graft on Friday due to some separation inside the incision. Howard asked the doctor how long he thought it had been like this and he said a few days to a week. The nurse that was changing his bandage was not aware of this torn area, so I am very glad the doctor was there and saw this! He pointed it out to Ivy and I could see it as well. They will cover this area with a skin graft taken from his leg. The surgeon said there was some bowel there that he could see inside the incision, and he needs to put the skin graft over it, so that he does not end up with another fistula. Not what we wanted to hear! I spoke to the doctor in the hallway and he said Howard will need another surgery sometime in the future after he gets his strength back to fix the area where the skin graft will be, as this will require another hernia surgery. I told him I do not think Howard will be up for that. He said he will have to have it done, or it will just keep getting worse. Geez! Two family members have offered to give blood for Howard in case he needs it. So, hopefully they can get this done asap, I mentioned this to Dr. Feher and he thinks this is a good idea. Howard is anemic, today he did not need a transfusion, but better to be prepared. We thought he was going to get out of the hospital either today or tomorrow, but looks like it will be another few weeks still. Goodnight all! :) It all started off with a simple outpatient hernia repair surgery on 10/22, wow! On a positive note: Ivy said the incision site looks better, as last week...., well... I do not want to gross anyone out. :)
