Update on Laura Vanek-Schoolcraft - DAY 22. They did the surgery today to put the permanent shunt in to release fluid pressure buildup in the brain. No more tubes coming out her head now! All went well. The ventilator mode they have her on is one where she initiates each breath, but the vent adds a little volume. She has a tendency to open her eyes when they jostle her, especially when cleaning the Trach tube, which almost makes her gag, which they call a cough. Eyes still not reacting to the flashlight test yet though, nor does she appear to have awareness yet. But Im still jazzed about her reacting to loud sounds. When she starts to retract or localize when simulated she would then have moved up a level on the awareness chart I posted a few days ago (currently she extends when stimulated). I feel she may be close to that, because that is the level where she reacts to sound. Was informed today that Monday is the target date to transfer her to the LTAC facility, if all goes well. They are waiting on authorization from the insurance company, which they expect to come on Monday. Keep those prayers coming.
