Update on Mr. Gates Grandey and our spelunking adventures- Ok, - TopicsExpress

Update on Mr. Gates Grandey and our spelunking adventures- Ok, we got settled into Cooks yesterday morning. The hospitalist (Dr) came by late in the morning, and got the full story on Gates. (recap: presented with fever/headaches/stiff neck to ER, ruled out flu, strep, meningitis. Sent home with oral antibiotics / follow up with primary care. MRI Friday with right maxillary sinus occluded, headache worsened. No improvement by Monday evening hence the admission and blood patch) Hospitalist increased IV fluids/hr and non-narcotic pain meds around the clock. Consults for Neurology and Pain Mgmt Team called in. The doctor with the pain mgmt team got the full story, plan of attack was to get the pain resulting from spinal tap (to check for meningitis) out of the way and figure out what is original cause of headaches. Placed orders on chart for her fixes from spinal tap pain, and handed us to the Neurology team to get to the root of the evil(They were all in the room at the same time, kinda nice) Neurology stepped in and ordered another MRI on steroids and he said that since Gates moved during the 30 min MRI, would we consider anesthesia so he could sleep through the hour and a half MRI and have less chance of moving for the pictures. Well, duh....you bet. So....He will do that approximately noonish today. Now, Neurologist looked at previous MRI and thinks he sees the culprit which the previous radiologist didnt call our attention to. The sinuses in Gates frontal lobe appear to be enlarged and causing pressure on his coconut as the doc calls it, which would most definitely cause headaches. So he wants to see if there is a difference between Friday and now and if it is the same or different. Doc said this could be the reason he has been having these crazy headaches for 6 months (in which our sweet boy never complained. This is information we got from him in the very beginning) They will be adding contrast in the MRI looking at the blood highway in his coconut, because Doc says that Gates is guarding his neck alot, meaning he cant turn head left or right or bend it down (chin-to-chest), So he wants to make sure he doesnt miss anything there. SO....in conclusion....we are still looking....in the meantime, Mr Gates is doing a lot of sleeping, the headaches are still there and hurt but not as bad. My concern after MRI, is getting this kid to eat and drink. I know he is getting fluids so Im not concerned about that, but his appetite is nothing. Poor guy. Yesterday afternoon he was feeling better with the fluids and he was smiling some. Wanted to watch TV, tried, but said with a smile...Nevermind, thats not gonna work. His sense of humor is back. Thank goodness. So keep him in your prayers!! We are going to get this figured out!!
