Update on dad: They are talking about dcing him tomorrow but dad was told because he is now on anticoagulants and he has damage to his vessels due to the size of the clot that he will have to postpone his long awaited back surgery. With that being said he wants to talk to the doctor about getting a pain pump so he can better stay on top of his chronic, severe low back pain. That discussion topic may give him more time in the hospital. He had to walk the short hall with the OT today. By the time he got back to his room he was exhausted with loads of back pain. I got there well over an hour after he got back to his room and he was still in major pain. I asked his nurse what his orders for pain meds were and she told me morphine iv q 4 and 2 tramadol with flexeril prn. She gave him his pills then stating that he couldnt have any more morphine because it had only been an hour. When I left I told him that if he didnt have relief within an hour of the tramdol and flexeril to ask his nurse to call the doctor and ask for something stronger.... Well he must have asked. He just called me and said that he finally has relief! The doctor changed his meds to Dilaudid IV, morphine PRN, 3 tramadol and the flexeril!!! He said he thinks the doctor wanted to make sure he was completely and totally pain free because he felt loopy and could barely keep his eyes open. But he admitted I was right when I told him that dilaudid was good stuff! I think he was asleep before I hung up! Lol Im glad he will sleep without pain tonight. :)
