Update on injured MCSO Deputies On Wednesday, November 5, at approximately 6:15 AM, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Layman and Sergeant Jack Valenzuela checked out on a motorist assist call on the main lanes of Interstate 45 Northbound, near the Wilson Road exit. The Deputies assisted a stranded motorist that was in a lane of traffic. After assisting the motorist and getting the motor vehicle on its way, both Deputies started to proceed back to the patrol car that was blocking the lane of traffic. A motorist that was traveling on the main lanes of Interstate 45 struck the patrol car. The vehicle then struck the two Deputies that were proceeding to the patrol car. Both Deputies were transported by Ambulance to a local hospital. Sergeant Valenzuela was later released from the hospital with minor injuries. Deputy Layman sustained serious injuries from being struck by the motor vehicle and is expected to be at the hospital for a lengthy stay. The Layman family has requested their privacy at the hospital while Deputy Layman recovers. Deputy Layman will likely be off-duty for an undetermined period of time and his wife and family will have to provide care for him during his recovery period. The Montgomery County Law Enforcement Association has set up a benefit fund for the Layman family, to assist the Layman family with financial burdens during this time. The Montgomery County Law Enforcement Association has requested donations to assist the Layman family to be made at any Woodforest National Bank to the, “Robert Layman Benefit Fund”. Sheriff Tommy Gage and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the public for the outpouring of support, thoughts, and prayers for Deputy Layman and Sergeant Valenzuela during this time.
