Update on the North Rome Fire: As of 1:10 AM, firefighters have reported several structural collapses within the main 100,000 sq foot warehouse that originally caught fire and in other areas of the scene. The fire has spread to several adjacent structures, including storage units and another 20000 sq foot warehouse. The fire has spread also to the nearby abandoned ONeal Manufacturing site, where Rome Fire has asked that Georgia Forestry respond to assist in containing that part of the fire. Firefighters have also succeeded thus far in protecting other neighboring structures. Firefighters are fighting adverse conditions including high winds and extreme heat, and rehab operations have been kicked into overdrive keeping firefighters hydrated. At around 12:45, firefighters fighting the blaze from several aerial ladder trucks were told to cease aerial operations and come down due to lightning in the area. Though spot fires continue to pop up due to blowing embers, firefighters seem to be slowly gaining the upper hand in the fight, but will likely be on scene well into Tuesday.
