Update: the West Covina Planning Commission voted Tuesday to allow the demolition of Carleton Winslow, Jr.s St. Marthas Church (1956) for a housing project. They accepted a consultants report that there were 15 other churches of higher architectural quality in the city; however the report listed only 4 and did not offer any historical or architectural analysis to support this opinion. It also did not explain why, of those Modern churches, only St. Marthas was selected by Gebhard and Winter for their guidebook to Southern California architecture. This is one reason why we lose a lot of good architecture.
