Updated: Before going solar, the following are the preliminary steps you can do to minimize the cost of the solar system you will need. Reduce your energy footprint/energy demand by moving away from inefficient appliances and adapting designs that tap free lighting cooling or heating. I will summarize here so people can follow: 1. Change incandescents and flourescents into LED lights and install auto on/off switches. (A DIY version of auto light switch is being shared freely by Kasolar Ed Brisenio at our solar groups) 2. Replace aircons, refs, freezers, washing machines, water pumps and microwave ovens to inverter types. 3. Fix insulation of ceilings, air tightness of airconditioned rooms, rubber seals of refs and freezers. 4. If in the process of building a house orient the roof midrib along the East-West axis and make the south facing side of the roof bigger because this is the area best suited to place your panels. 5. Maximize natural lighting in the design of windows. Exploit natural breezes in the design. 6. Maximize 12vdc/24vdc appliances and convert 220 vac adaptors of electronic equipment to dc inputs by simply cutting off the transformer part and connecting the output cord to the battery bank of suitable dc voltage. 7. Avoid electric heating element type water heaters and use solar radiator heaters or motor driven cavitation heaters. 8. Use or buy 3 phase motors with soft starts features or thse utilizing vfd’s. 9. Remove the pressure tank in your jetmatic pump and replace with an elevated tank. 10. Schedule washing, ironing at daytime so power from solar panels can directly drive your loads via Entrada-Salida Mode thus reducing the load on your battery bank. 11. To the extent possible, already start investing in propane or butane powered appliances like heaters, aircons, refs, freezers, gensets and cooking ranges because sooner home water electrolizers powered by your rooftop panels will be giving you free hydrogen to power these including your future fuel cell car. 12. Replace your old CRT tv sets to LCD or LED tv. 13. Replace your old 75 watts e fans to 15 watts dc fans Mga Kasolars, you may add to this list as I may have missed some more enrgy saving tips.
