It features stars you’d expect – Jennifer Lawrence, Jay Z and Beyoncé, Rihanna – and some you may not. So how do the folks at Forbes come up with the shortlist? They estimate earnings for the last 12 months, measure a person’s fame by counting how many times they were mentioned in the media, and count their Facebook and Twitter followers. From this, they assess their overall impact. 20. Kanye West In 20th place on Forbes list is Kanye West. His marriage to Kim Kardashian has kept him in the headlines but its his music, most recently his Yeezus album and tour, that got him there in the first place. 19. Lady Gaga Its been a relatively quiet 12 months for Lady Gaga - at her peak in 2011, she earned $90 million. Her third album Artpop didnt reach the dizzy heights of its predecessors but her ArtRave tour has still sold out 78 dates worldwide. 18. Taylor Swift Taylor Swift earned a whopping $64 million in the last 12 months, thanks to the success of her Red album and tour, and endorsement deals with Diet Coke, Keds and CoverGirl. 17. Miley Cyrus This is Mileys first inclusion on the Forbes Celebrity 100 in four years. Her Bangerz album and tour have helped, but so has the controversy over her MTV performance, where she twerked up against Robin Thicke during their Blurred Lines duet. 16. Roger Federer Roger Federer is one of several professional athletes on Forbes shortlist. He made $4.2 million from winnings over the last 12 months, and another $52 million from endorsements with luxury brands such as Rolex and Moet & Chandon. 15. Kobe Bryant LA Lakers basketballer Kobe Bryant is the highest-paid player in the NBA, earning $30.5 million for the 2013-14 season. He also pockets over $30 million per year from deals with Nike, Lenovo, Panini and others. 14. Bruno Mars Bruno Mars had the honour of performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in February, making him the youngest act to ever do so. Hes also midway through a world tour to support Unorthodox Jukebox, which was the fourth best-selling album in the world last year. 13. Bon Jovi Bon Jovi earned $82 million in the last 12 months, largely thanks to their relentless touring schedule to support their 12th album, What About Now. 12. Jennifer Lawrence Jennifer Lawrence may have missed out on an Oscar this year (she was nominated for American Hustle), but she continues to be a staple of celebrity columns and best dressed lists. Add to that her roles in The Hunger Games franchise and X-Men: Days of Future Past and Jens one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. 11. Steven Spielberg Steven Spielberg earned $100 million in the last year alone. As well as his upcoming Jurassic Park reboot, he was an executive producer on the new Transformers blockbuster, Age of Extinction. 10. Robert Downey Jr Robert Downey Jr is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and its all down to one role: Iron Man. Iron Man 3 was among the highest-grossing films of 2013 and he also helped The Avengers become the third biggest movie of all time, grossing $1.5 billion. 9. Katy Perry Katy Perry earned $40 million in the last year, a combination of music sales (her album Prism was releaed in October), endorsement deals with CoverGirl and Pop Chips, and her own fragrance, Killer Queen.
