Upon arrival in Germany, went from Hell On Wheels to Spearhead, then on arrival in Heildelberg Seventh Army. I am not sure I made the right decision, but one day I was called to an auditorium in Heildelberg. There were about 12 of us in this giant hall. They proceeded to try and recruit us for West Point. They ran films and talked for a few hours. I thought about it for about 2 seconds and declined the offer. I knew that upon graduation as a Second Lieutenant life expectancy was about 16 minutes in Vietnam. Sometimes I wonder what life would have been had I taken them up on it. My last 30 days they really put the pressure on me to reinlist. Contact with an officer daily. I was stenciling by hand signal flags on choppers headed for Nam. I hid the majority of the day.
