Upper West To Get 6 New SHSs By Aaron Okyere Regions that were allocated less than five of the 50 Senior High Schools (SHSs) to be built this year throughout the country will receive more in the next batch of 50 according to Deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudzeto –Ablakwa. “The Upper West Region, for instance, which was allocated only one of the new SHSs to be built this year will be given at least six out of the next 50,” the Deputy Minister said in an interview yesterday with the ‘Daily Post’ when the paper sought to find out why some regions received less than five of the SHSs to be built this year. The Eastern Region received only three while the Volta Region received four out of the first batch of 50 new SHSs to be built all over the country this year. The NDC, as part of its 2012 manifesto earmarked 200 Community Day SHSs as priority projects within four years. A total of 50 SHSs are to be put up every year to attain the 200 SHSs by 2016. Under the project, each beneficiary community will have classroom blocks, an administration block, a library, a masters bungalow and teachers quarters. One of the schools in each region will be developed into a sports college with a football field and other sports facilities. President Mahama constituted a Five-member Technical Committee to provide technical details of the 200 SHSs. The committee later submitted its report to the President providing simple models of the schools, specific locations, cost and mode of allocation of the schools to the regions. According to Hon. Okudzeto-Ablakwa who is also the MP for North Tongu, the first batch of 50 was allocated based on the recommendations of the Technical Committee. Priority was given to newly created districts with no SHSs, old districts without SHSs and districts where the SHSs are under pressure because they are very few while the Junior High Schools (SHSs) are many. “However, to attain equity, regions which received fewer allocations of the new SHSs in the first batch of 50, will receive more in the second batch of 50,” he assured.
