Urge Bali Restaurants to Stop Supporting Cruelty to Ducks and Geese Tell Bali Restaurants to Stop Selling Foie Gras Now © StopGavage In order to produce foie gras, which is French for fatty liver, a metal tube is rammed down birds throats three times a day and several pounds of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs. The birds are force-fed such large quantities of food that their legs often collapse when they attempt to stand. The metal tubes sometimes tear holes in the animals throats. Fire, a restaurant at the W Hotel in Seminyak, and MÉTIS, a restaurant in Kuta, source their foie gras from Rougié, the self-proclaimed worlds #1 producer of foie gras. Earlier this year, PETA U.S. investigated Palmex, Inc., a division of Rougié. The investigation found that ducks spend the last few weeks before slaughter housed individually in cramped cages that are barely larger than their own bodies. The ducks cannot spread a single wing or do much more than stand up and sit down. PETA U.S. investigator also documented that some ducks bills become cracked and bloody as a result of force-feeding. Avian veterinarian Dr. Anthony Pilny reviewed the investigation footage and concluded, Ducks need to be able to move, walk, stretch, preen, bathe … and exercise. This housing denies and frustrates the ducks basic, biological needs, and it is cruel and inhumane. These animals feel pain, grief, and loss. It is unjust to treat them in this way …. Although PETA Asia has made them aware of the barbaric abuse of ducks and geese on foie gras farms, all three restaurants refuse to remove foie gras from their menus. Numerous institutions, including the European Unions Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Animal Welfare, have condemned the production of foie gras, and its production is banned in more than 15 countries, including the U.K., Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Israel.
