Urgent Action Needed FOR Elephants and Rhinos to Support Key Commercial Ban Proposed in New Jersey Call the Governor: 609-292-6000 Dear Friends, please take a moment over the 24-48 hours to support efforts to ban the sale of ivory and rhino horn in New Jersey. ACTION ----> If you have friends and family who live in New Jersey - please ask them to call the governors office - via 609-292-6000 - and relay support of a complete ivory sales ban in New Jersey. Governor Chris Christie is poised to either sign or veto the bill, presently sitting on his desk, by July 31 thats this Thursday! ACTION ----> Everyone is invited to write to the New Jersey governor ASAP directly and ask him to ban the ivory trade. Here is his online contact form: state.nj.us/governor/contact/ ... Please remember time is of the essence as the governors decision is impending... Over the weekend Andy Dobson, a Princeton University professor, set the record straight in favor of the ban FOR elephants and justice in The Times of Trenton. Mr. Dobson has taught courses on conservation biology and population ecology and has worked on elephants and the ivory trade for more than 25 years. The proposed legislation to ban trade in ivory in New Jersey will set a strong precedent to other states to pass similar legislation; it will send a message that China needs to hear that all trade in ivory, elephant and other endangered species, is illegal, unethical and ultimately unsustainable, Professor Dobson stated. The Princeton professor, who spoke at the 2013 International March for Elephants in Princeton, continued, I strongly urge Gov. Christie to sign measure S2012 now on his desk. It will make a big difference for elephants and send a strong message that trade in New Jersey is vibrant but bounded by strong ethical consideration. ACTION ---> We invite everyone to take a moment and comment on Professor Dobsons op-ed in support of S.2012. Its time for the law to reflect the voice of the people to end international and domestic trades driving key species to extinction. Here is the link: nj/opinion/index.ssf/2014/07/opinion_a_dead_elephant_is_a_dead_elephant_is_a_dead_elephant.html Elephants are a keystone species, and if we can ban ivory sales in New Jersey, a strong trade state, it could potentially create a domino effect for good impacting many other species in the wild. Sadly, by providing a point of import for ivory, New Jersey is complicit in sustaining the ivory trade that is fueling the killing of the elephants. Governor Chris Christie can change that. He currently has a bill on his desk that will ban the import and sale of ivory in New Jersey. We respectfully call upon Governor Christie to sign S.2012 into law and end New Jersey’s role in the terrorist based ivory trade. Sincerely, Your Name Town **Be sure to include ANY connection to NJ Everyone attached is our Coalition Letter to the Governor. I hope you like it. Also included are some graphics in support of the NJ ivory and rhino horn sales ban... We still be sending out our first virtual newsletter, with general eDC updates, in early August.
