Urgent Action: Residents at Risk in the Zoning Update https://youtube/watch?v=mew5ZjOCvDk Don’t Miss the Town Hall Meeting Wednesday, Nov. 19 There MUST be more residents than developers at this meeting. You don’t need to speak to send a message. Being there with your neighbors will demonstrate the strength of the residents. The Zoning Ordinance Update is currently in a proposed “Redline” form to show how it changes the current zoning. It contains much that is NOT good for residents. It also lacks many protections for residents that the current Zoning provides. The new Zoning ordinance will spell out what can be built in Santa Monica for decades to come. A Town Hall Meeting has been arranged so that residents can make comments on the proposed changes in a more relaxed setting than at a Planning Commission Meeting with strict time limits. Even if you say only three words at the meeting it will make a difference. Some issues of concern include: · Stop over development on Wilshire Wilshire is two miles long. Two miles of dense development on Wilshire will be the equivalent of the Hines development in terms of generating more traffic. Residents want the same height and density on Wilshire as on Santa Monica Blvd. · Power must remain with the Planning Commission and not given to Planning staff All decisions on development should continue to have a public process and be appealable. The Zoning update proposes to give too much power to staff · “A” lots and residential lots throughout the city should not be commercialized These lots serve as buffers between commercial boulevards and residential neighborhoods. After more than a year of fighting traffic-generating density throughout our city, developers and their lawyers are continuing to work overtime to drown out the voices of residents and influence the Planning Commission to allow them to maximize their projects. The developers have persuaded the Commission to postpone discussion of important issues like height and density and Activity Centers. This is why the Commission needs to hear from residents NOW.
