Uriah – Dead People-Pleaser 2 Sam 11:8-9 - Then David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. And Uriah went out of the kings house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the kings house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. ESV Uriah is one of those sad characters in scripture. He was faithful to his king, his employer, so much so that ultimately it was a major factor in his early and avoidable death. King David, in order to cover up his sin of sleeping with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, and the consequent pregnancy, arranged for Uriah to come back from the war for a conjugal visit. Uriah, not knowing any of what had happened didn’t head back to his wife, but instead slept in the palace’s servant’s quarters as a mark of his dedication to David. This caused a problem for David, because Bathsheba was pregnant by him. Eventually David chose to get Uriah killed in battle and take Bathsheba for himself. Read the whole thing in 2 Sam 11:1-27, it is like something from a modern day soap opera. In recovery, both secular and Christian, we see our Uriahs. People who exhibit codependency in the form of dedication to others to the point of not taking care of their own family, allowing others to use them and even harming themselves. This is an extraordinarily hard habit to break, mostly because it is a deeply ingrained issue, and because it often looks socially acceptable.
