Use of force by officers fell by almost 60 percent over the same period. Police departments across the country are not populated with angels; rather, they are made up of fallible human beings. Strict accountability is, therefore, imperative. Fortunately, as stories like this illustrate, practical, easy-to-implement steps exist by which to keep police on a (relatively) short leash. This should be comforting. No, the police state isnt inevitable, whatever Alex Jones may suggest. No, your local police department probably isnt about to turn your city into Ferguson. Nonetheless, your police department isnt as accountable as it should be, and, for that reason alone, we ought to push for as much civilian oversight as possible.
