Use of the active voice in writing shortens content and speeds - TopicsExpress

Use of the active voice in writing shortens content and speeds reading. That both saves space and gives energy to your copy. In addition, it saves your reader time and effort reading. Furthermore, it adds immediacy and action to your page. Writing with the active words isnt always easy. For most people, it takes effort, but with some practice, it becomes second nature. The effect, however, is to bring new life and energy to what you write and what your readers read. That often translates into readers taking the actions you want, such as clicking links or buttons or making purchases. Here is a good tutorial on active voice versus passive voice: quickanddirtytips/education/grammar/active-voice-versus-passive-voice I would depart from it only in saying that while technically versions of the to be verbs arent necessarily passive verbs, any time you add word strings between the noun and the verb, you dampen the effect of the verb. Im not suggesting that you never shorten all copy to its simplest form, but I am saying that short, succinct (concise) writing is always clearest and most effective. One reason that I like writing on Twitter is that its 140-character limit forces you to write succinctly. Succinct writing aids writing in the active voice. Write sparingly, write well.
