Using Masking Tape To get a clean line using masking tape on a rough substrate (such as the vinyl coated canvas I chose for this demo) all you need to do is first apply a couple coats of the background color, effectively sealing the edge of the tape. In this case, I used white tempera. It dies quickly, and can be wiped off the substrate with a wet sponge or cloth after the lettering color is dry. Latex will work, too, but it wont wipe off easily. The secret to the technique is to fill all of the open little air pockets that reside underneath the edge of the masking tape. Thats why its best to do two coats. Notice that the clean edge (along the top side of the tape) is as smooth as the edges that were painted with a lettering brush. The opposite edge of the tape shows minor bleeding. The same method can be used for lettering with a computer-generated paint mask. Just make sure that the pressure-sensitive film is pressed down firmly and uniformly with a squeegee. Then it will be ready to accept the sealing coats.
