VACANCY DIRECTOR- LIVESTOCK TO MARKETS Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is an umbrella organisation currently supporting community based conservation in northern Kenya currently supporting twenty six (26) community conservancies cutting across various counties namely; Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Baringo, Laikipia, Garrisa, Meru, Tana River and Lamu. In 2006, The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) launched a livestock trading business – “Livestock-to-Markets” -- which sources cattle from NRT member conservancies, fattens them on the OlPejeta Conservancy and ultimately delivers them as cold carcasses to butchers and wholesalers in Nairobi and other cities. In 2014 LTM received a social-impact investment sufficient to ramp up the business from 1,000 cattle per annum to 10,000 cattle per annum. LTM is in the process of being transferred from NRT to the newly created NRT Trading, an organization established to operate NRT’s commercial enterprises. This position will provide critical leadership for the LTM business. The LTM Director will participate with the CEO’s of NRT and NRT Trading in establishing the long-term business strategy for Livestock-to-Markets and be responsible for LTM’s daily operations and achieving the business’s performance objectives. Position Responsibilities: • Manage the daily operations of the Livestock to Market business, from purchase through sale in a way that optimizes results for both the Conservancies and the LTM business. • Work in partnership with OlPejeta Conservancy to assure smooth operation of the LTM supply chain, including purchase, access to grazing, herding, animal husbandry, slaughter and marketing. • Establish a system to streamline the LTM operation from purchase, moving the cattle to Lewa, vaccine/testing, castration/branding, trekking to Laikipia and following the animal through to slaughter. • Maintain accurate records for each animal purchased and accurate financial records for all LTM activities. • Keep accurate returns and monthly reporting to CEO • Maintain close and effective working relationships with NRT and Conservancy leadership. • Work with the appropriate government representatives to stay current on livestock regulations and laws, County activities relating to livestock and veterinary laws Desired Characteristics: • Minimum degree in livestock related discipline with over 10 years relevant experience • Have an understanding of livestock production, preferably worked with livestock; • Should have knowledge and back ground in community conservation and Understand Kenya and the different tribes/and their traditions; • Ability to liaise and develop mutual relations with donors, government institutions ,NGOs and a wide variety of stakeholders on the ground • Enjoy working with pastoral communities and their livestock; • Have experience in managing people and able to organize tasks efficiently; Interested candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are requested to send their applications by close of business 28th March 2014 to: SENIOR ADMINISTRATOR, NORTHERN RANGELANDS TRUST, PRIVATE BAG ISIOLO.
