The event will be at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History Nov. 6 to Nov. 11 leading up to Veterans Day. All current for former military members can visit all the Springfield Museums for free on Veterans Day. The auction is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday Nov. 8 at the museum. Tickets are available at veterans-photography-auction.eventbrite. This exhibit and auction is an extension of the partnership Smith & Wesson announced with The Friends of Ward 8 last January where Smith & Wesson donated money to buy equipment for the program. Much of that money came from the Celebration of Heroes Memorial Day Event and an annual game supper. Friends of Ward 8 hopes to expand this program and other alternative therapy programs at Ward 8 with the money raised through the art auction. Smith & Wesson also provided some facts surrounding the PTSD issue among vets: • About 30 percent of all Vietnam veterans now have or have had PTSD. • About 11 to 20 percent of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have or have had PTSD. • 118,829 veterans of post 9/11 deployments have been diagnosed with PTSD; the number when taking into account undiagnosed cases is estimated to be 460,000. • 22 veterans commit suicide every day; veterans make up 7 percent of the U.S. population but account for 22 percent of the suicides. • A veteran commits suicide every 80 minutes. • 38 percent of married Vietnam veterans divorced within 6 months of the veteran’s return from deployment. • Only 53 percent of veterans suffering from probable PTSD seek help. #MAvets #SpringfieldMA
