VALE, Ore. (AP) — Federal officials say it could take a few years to rehabilitate sage and grass lands burned this summer in Eastern Oregon. The Ontario Argus Observer reports that much of the land in two fires in Malheur and Harney counties was habitat for sage grouse, which are under consideration for protection on the endangered species list. The fires burned more than 650 square miles, or about 418,000 acres. Spokesman Larry Moore of the Bureau of Land Management says the top priority is to stabilize soils to prevent erosion and then to preserve unburned areas in the fire area as a source for seeds. After that, efforts are focused on preventing the spread of invasive species and rebuilding fences and replacing signs.
