VANQUISHED by Riaan Labuschagne The Vanquished is a novel set in the struggle for national liberation in South Africa during the 1970’s and 1980’s. It tells the story of the African National Congress (ANC), its covert operations and the secretive world of the South African government’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). It recalls the armed conflict between the ANC and the South African government as told by two men on the opposing sides. The story unfolds through the life experiences of James Kwalo, a member of the ANC’s armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and Stefan Roux, an undercover agent of NIS. Unbeknownst to each other, former childhood friends James and Stefan find themselves on the same battleground on opposing sides of the political divide. The Vanquished is based on true events and real characters as recalled by and told by James Kwalo and Stefan Roux both serving members of MK and NIS at the time. Certain names, including those of the two main characters have been changed. Vanquished is Riaan Labuschagne’s second book. The first, On South Africa’s Secret Service was published in 2002.
