VANUATU has called for the opportunity to meet Papuan civil society groups in order to determine human rights standards in the territory. Vanuatus Foreign Minister Edward Natapei told Radio Australias Pacific Beat that he believed a recent Melanesian Spearhead Group ministerial meeting had been hijacked by Indonesia. He added that Vanuatu could only participate in the MSG delegation visit if the it was given the opportunity to meet Papuan civil society groups, pro-independence groups, church leaders and other groups concerned with human rights violations in West Papua. Fiji, the Solomon islands and Papua New Guinea capitulated to Indonesian demands and met officials for trade talks instead of meeting human rights groups as earlier planned. Vanuatu pulled out of the visit in protest against Indonesias actions. Source: Vanuatu Daily Post and Scoop etan.org/issues/wpapua/2013/1307wpap.htm
