VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: Michael Presnell Knives Growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, I spent most of my days in the woods. I have always been fascinated with knives and outdoor tools related to hunting and fishing. I made my first knife in shop class my freshman year in high school (1989) and I was immediately hooked on forging. Shortly after that I got a 50lb anvil, a hand crank blower and a rivet forgel. This was my first setup. I didnt have anyone to really show me what to do with it or how to use it so I just fooled with it on and off, figuring it out as I went. It wasnt until about 2009 when I got really serious about bladesmithing. I bought a gas forge and took two-week class through the American Bladesmith Society. I made some great friends during that two-weeks, a few of which have helped me along the way. Shortly after that two-week class, my hobby became an obsession. I got a grinder and a heat treat oven, spending every spare moment in my shop. Around 2011 I worked installing flooring in our family business. Work really began to slow down giving me an open opportunity to transition to a full-time knifemaker. Ive been making knives full time ever since. Along with forging, I also make stock-removal blades. I produce the best quality knives that I can using a variety of steels. All of our knives are created by hand in my home shop and are proudly made in the USA. I do a wide range of leatherwork as well, making my own sheaths and fixing my nieces saddles. I prefer to use American Hardwoods when possible. I also use exotic woods, Micarta, bone and antler. I am unable to use woods from the rosewood family, as I have a severe allergy to the oil from these woods. This is why, when Im in the shop, you will always find an Epi-Pen nearby! My love for the art of knifemaking has done nothing but grow over the past few years. After all the knives Ive made over the years I still feel like a kid at Christmas when its time to test a blade. The excitement of seeing one of my knives perform well never gets old. I test all of my blades before the knife is finished to make sure they stand up to their intended purpose. All of my knives come with a lifetime common sense warranty. As a member of the American Bladesmith Society, I try to live their philosophy of helping others entering the craft. I feel blessed to be able to do something that I love every day. https://facebook/MichaelPresnellKnives
