VERY Cool Weight Loss Trick Imagine eating all the calories you’d like...and still lose weight. The catch? Well, you have to literally ‘imagine’ those calories as you eat. A recent study revealed that brainpower can actually affect how our body interprets what we eat. The study suggested that by using our thoughts or “tricking” our mind into thinking we are about to consume something decadent we could have an impact on a protein our bodies release to control metabolism and appetite. High levels of this appetite hormone called ghrelin appear before we eat and decline soon after meals. Recent studies showed that by just having the mind-set of indulgence, or rather just imagining you are consuming more calories could alter the ghrelin levels in the brain. By thinking you are indulging in a high-calorie meal, your ghrelin levels drop much quicker, making you feel full quicker as opposed to thinking about how hungry you’ll still be if you just had a low-cal snack. According to Alia Crum of Yale University, “When you are dieting, you want to eat fewer actual calories, but the mind-set of ‘Okay, I’ve got to eat sensibly, I’ve got to eat low-fat,’ ... regardless of what you are eating, is actually countereffective. It’s telling your body, ‘I’m not getting enough,’ which relays back to your brain, ‘I’m not getting enough.’” You may be drinking a healthy shake but if you take a moment to mentally tell yourself that you really are indulging, you could be dropping your ghrelin levels...and the less ghrelin, the less you’ll want to eat. It really does become a mind over matter, with the matter being the need to eat more calories when you are feeling deprived on a diet. So take a moment to savor and appreciate the healthy foods you are eating but instead of telling yourself you’ll be hungry in an hour, start imagining everything you do eat is chock full of calories...heck, even pretend it’s all junk food, and see if it helps to curb your appetite.
