VERY IMPRESSIVE Speed and Flash! It’s Jeet Kune Do practitioner - TopicsExpress

VERY IMPRESSIVE Speed and Flash! It’s Jeet Kune Do practitioner Tommy Carruthers. The demo reminds me a lot of Kenpo Karate demonstrations and their techniques. Lots of Quick Speed, precise technical movement, a few hand slaps for sound and everyone goes “WOW!” It is what it is, a Martial “ART” and watching it, as you can see can be very impressive. If we stop there, we can all be impressed. However, as for myself, I have always wanted to know what the next level is… So for me, my questions when watching something like this would be “HOW does this relate to real fighting?” I mean no disrespect to Tommy Carruthers in this film. He is a very well known and accomplished martial artists. Truth is, when it comes to martial arts, they “ALL” have some great values and great things to offer… This being said, my reference is more so to the preparation of the fight. Real fighting in the forms of full contact sparring, sport fighting (Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai or MMA) or in the reality of street combat self defense. Without getting into the emotional details of how much more important the “Mind” is in a “REAL FIGHT” - as compared to speed, quickness and flashy techniques, I will just quote Tyson… Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth. Let this be a wake-up call to all those “Karate” schools out there that are more interested in their bank account than teaching your students the realities of the fight game. Yes, liability becomes an issue in full contact training, but if you really want to learn how to fight, “YOU NEED TO TRAIN FULL CONTACT!” However, once you have learned all your techniques, gained your speed and power etc. again, it all comes down to what Tyson said, Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth. If you have not prepared mentally, if your martial art has no “MIND” work, all your speed, technique and power are like a race car engine with no car to provide its movement. Often the mind work can be more grueling than the physical training. As a martial arts instructor, to teach your students the ultimate of survival self defense, you also risk losing them as students too. No one likes to get hit. No one likes being yelled at when they make a mistake that could have cost them their lives in a realistic situation. This alone is why so few karate, martial art schools don’t go to the next level in their training… The fear of losing students. I operated several commercial martial art schools for over 20 years and during that time I had over 3,000 students. Of them, only 389 reached a color belt rank. Of them, only 6 earned the rank of black belt… SIX! No, it’s not a lot, but I didn’t start a “Practical Self Defense” school to sell belts. I wanted my students to learn as I did, and be “BETTER” than I was. After all, the ultimate aim of any martial arts instructor is to hope his/her students will be better than they are.. In everything and anything they do in their lives, NOT just Martial Arts… Just sayin… Thanks David Weild for the youtube link.
