VERY INTERESTING! Many of you may have heard of the Rhodes Scholarship before, but have you ever question who is it named after? The Rhodes scholarship. The worlds oldest fellowship program, Rhodes scholarships provide students with two years of study at Oxford University in England. Well its named after Cecil Rhodes. Did you ever wonder what great accomplishments Cecil Rhodes had to have a scholarship named after him? Cecil Rhodes made the British tons of money and gave them the wealth that they currently have today and it came off the backs of the African people. Cecil was one of the fore fathers that brought British imperialism into Africa. The goal of British Imperialism was to take the resources and land from the African people. Cecil and the British were in the Scramble for Africa where Europeans were dividing the control of Africa. One of these countries was South Africa, which Great Britain gained controlled over. Rhodes used his wealth to finance British Empires to colonize South Africa and gain control over the mineral mines. With that control Europeans would torture, beat, and rape the natives. Cecil Rhodes would be named Chairman of the De Beers Diamond company. The diamond company that is well known today and was famous for forcing Africans into mining diamonds and other minerals which ultimately helped gained wealth for him and the British.
