VERY SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT . . . . Modi in, ads hailing Gandhi family martyrdom vanish from newspapers New Delhi: The first sign of the Congress losing all influence over the government matters can be seen or noticed in todays newspapers across India. Today is the 23rd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by the LTTE on May 21, 1991. Except a small advertisement issued by the Haryana Government, there are no other advertisements paying homage or hailing his martyrdom in newspapers or TV channels. But even on his 19th death anniversary -- a number less notable -- historian Ramachandra Guha remarked on the absurd scale of the amount spent mourning the dead leader: A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that on May 21, 2010, perhaps Rs 60 or 70 crore were spent by the taxpayer — without his and her consent — on praising Rajiv Gandhi. Since the practice has been in place since 2005, the aggregate expenditure to date on this account is probably in excess of Rs 300 crore. And its not the UPA alone which is guilty. Even during the NDA regime, crores were spent on advertisements. ibnlive.in/news/modi-in-ads-hailing-gandhi-family-martyrdom-vanish-from-newspapers/473290-37-64.html
