VERYL Thursday, January 22, 2015 Several years ago, Veryl Capps asked me to do his funeral when the time came. The time came last weekend when, seven years after his bride passed and in his 9th decade of this life, Veryl went to sleep so he could awake to his new life where time is no more. I sat with a terminally Ill man yesterday who is so lonely and in such despair he hung his head the entire hour we visited. He would hardly look me in the eye. He believes in God but cant feel Gods presence. Not one word of scripture, not one word of prayer could console him. His profound depth of loneliness will almost certainly kill him before his disease finishes its work. His sadness was palpable, almost contagious. I dont know what Id say if I were doing his funeral today. As it is, Im waiting to board a flight to Dallas. Well say goodbye to Veryls body at Dallas National Cemetery. When I preach his funeral this afternoon all Ill have to do is get out of the way. Veryl died full of joy and hope that was also palpable and contagious. His life was his joy-filled epitaph. Tonight, God willing, Ill lay my head on my own pillow at home. Ill thank God for the safe journey. And, Ill ponder again how it is that some die so lonely and some die so joyfully. I wont take for granted that it just comes naturally.
