VETERAN’S SUMMER LEAGUE – HEAT 3 (Sponsored by Rob’s Bait and Tackle) Mullet and Mackerel seemed to have been the main targets for most competitors in this heat and with reports of shoals of the latter being seen and caught at many open sea marks, tackle bags included floats, lures and, as an option of last resort, a set or two of three feathers. In the event, Mullet proved just as elusive as ever and whilst a number of the Vets caught Mackerel, almost all were well below the minimum weight. Just two fish were brought to the scales and it was earlier heat winners who again took the top honours and the points. Paul Serpell (Plymouth SAC) was the outright and well-deserved winner with a fine specimen rated Grey Mullet of 4 lb. 11 oz. (125%) with his club colleague, Paul Green, the runner up with a Mackerel of 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (87.5%). As a result, the league positions are now: Paul Green - 4 pts. Paul Serpell - 3 “ Mike Hodge - 1 “ Remainder - still nowhere! As winner and runner up were being congratulated by the Federation’s Chairman, Andy Rye, and being presented with the tackle vouchers valued at £20.00 and £10.00 respectively that were kindly provided by Rob’s Bait and Tackle, the occasion was marked in grand style by an over flight of The Morley Arms beer garden by the R.A.F.s Red Arrows! The competition organisers feel obliged to say, however, that they may not be able to lay on the latter at the end of every heat. Heat 4 is to be held on Wednesday 10th/Thursday 11th September 2014 and with the rules allowing an individual to weigh-in a maximum of three fish in each heat and scoring a possible maximum six points, even at this stage the league competition is still wide open. Would be entrants are therefore reminded that entry forms are still available at local tackle shops.
